On an unassuming Saturday morning I landed up at ZooBar, Mumbai with a few friends. One would wonder why someone would term an eatery the way this place is named. But, a quick walk from the entrance point to the spacious interior of this food joint instantly puts your queries to rest. The place is dotted with interesting animal paintings and figurines. Also, since the owner is an animal lover he has ensured that this restaurant is pet-friendly. The ambience sports amber lighting even during breakfast hours breaking away from the mundane look and feel most restaurants operating during this time of the day. Soaking into the sights and sounds of the place, we quickly settled at our table and placed our orders. Here is look at my gluttony with the breakfast menu: BREAD BUTTER JAM If you are at a place serving Continental breakfast, it is only customary to commence it with toasted bread laced with butter and jam. In order to cater to different palate requirements the bread toast platter came with three different types of jams - strawberry, mixed fruit and orange. The slices of bread had been toasted perfectly and we were off to an appetizing start. CREAMY MUSHROOM CHEESE ON TOAST Toasted slices of bread came topped with one of the most lip-smacking mushroom ragout. The ragout was mixed with dollops of cheese to arrive at a creamy mushroom topping. The earthy flavor of mushrooms was exhibited beautifully in this dish that was clearly my most favorite. Fresh arugula leaves and hash browns were the seamless accompaniments with the creamy mushrooms. BAKED BEANS AND CHEESE ON TOAST The place has a slightly different take on the way the baked beans are served. The dish came with toasted bread, hash browns and a generous portion of baked beans topped with a layer of molten cheese. The sweetness of the baked beans was balanced off by flavors from the cheese. EGGS FLORENTINE My breakfast is incomplete without eggs. The egg Florentine dish was my second most favorite dish. Two beautifully poached eggs sat on a bed of crispy bread covered with blanched spinach. A topping of hollandaise and a side of hash browns made this dish impeccable. BEVERAGES
For me chilled milkshakes and cold coffee completed my breakfast. The chocolate and strawberry milkshakes were served in cute milk bottles reminiscent of a bygone era that one feels nostalgic about and takes an instant liking for. The milkshakes were prepared carefully so as to not overpower them with sugar. The cold coffee served packed a stimulating punch and was low on sugar as well. The manager explained that sugar amounts were deliberately kept low in the beverages in order to cater to a growing population of the health conscious diners. The pricing of aforementioned dishes is not too steep in my opinion. Also, the service is very amicable. So, do try out the ZooBar for breakfast as well and let me know of your experience. Till then, HAPPY EATING... |
